About the department

The Department of English Studies in consonance with its mission statement is committed to promoting an intellectual climate through artistic creation, critical mediation and innovative ideation. The Department inculcates critical reading of the self and the society among the students with the aim of moulding them into responsible and socially sensitive citizens. The Department facilitates their holistic development by building emotional, academic, social, professional and global competencies. Offers programme in BA, MA and M.Phil. in English.

Key Features

ATHENA
The Department circulating Library named ATHENA. It has more than 2000 books including popular fiction, classics, biographies and inspirational books. In addition, the library has 500 World Classics in digital form. The library is intended to spread the habit of reading in the institution.

BEC Programme [Cambridge University]
Business English Certificate is a programme conducted by the British Council. The Council and the Department of English prepare the students for the Cambridge University Certification programme known as BEC. Students are given training for three levels of BECPreliminary, Vantage and Higher. BEC has lifetime validity and it is universally recognized as the benchmark of efficiency in communication. It is also recognized as an essential qualification by more than 150 multinationals and business houses in India and abroad.

CALT (English Language Laboratory)
The Department has a CALT (Computer Aided Language Teaching) programme. All first year students (Part II – Language) get an hour per week in the language laboratory as a part of their curricular training. There is no prescribed time limit for any user. The self learning programmes in the language laboratory and a multimedia teaching strategy improve the linguistic competency of the slow learners.

Literary Association – MINERVA
Various competitions are organized by the students for the students every year.


Debating & Oratorical Club – CICERO
Debates are conducted every fortnight with cash prizes.

Clubs and Activities

Minerva Literary and Arts Club, Debate Club, Film Society, Reading Club and Photography Club.

Lab
